Destiny is a futuristic, first-person shooter video game released September 9, 2014. It’s the first of its kind being an MMORPG FPS. Players can explore planets while killing off evil aliens and upgrading weapons and armor with other players online.
The Top 10 Tips You Need To Know For Destiny
1. How to Obtain More Ascendant Materials
There are a number of ways to gain Ascendant materials to upgrade your gear.
Dismantling Legendary gear (2-6 Ascendant materials depending if upgraded)
Earning a Gold Tier rating at a live event (1 per day)
Opening a chest in the Vault of Glass (possibly up to 3)
Decrypting any Rare or higher engram (random chance)
Crucible reward (random chance)
If you have at least level 2 Vanguard or Crucible reputation, you can purchase a pair of Legendary boots for 65 Marks and dismantle them for 2-3 Ascendant Shards.
2. Resources And What They’re For
Upgrading your gear is key if you want to attempt the higher level raids and strikes in Destiny. You’ll need to harvest the resources from each planet to do so. Don’t turn in your planet resources for reputation because you’ll want to save it for your higher level weapon upgrades.
Earth – Spinmetal
Moon – Helium Filaments
Venus – Spirit Bloom
Mars – Relic Iron
The best way to locate resources is to team up with a friend, hop on your Sparrows, and make laps around the map looking for anything glowing. Having a second perspective will help you cover more ground. Just communicate with your teammate when either of you find a resource or chest.
As of Bungie’s Dec. 1, 2014 update, 20 resources can be purchased for either 10 Vanguard or Crucible Marks at the Tower.
At early levels you’ll start receiving items that are useful later on.
Strange Coin – Purchasing Exotic gear and Exotic Shards
Mote of Light – Purchasing Exotic Engrams
Ascendant Shard – Upgrading Legendary armor
Ascendant Energy – Upgrading Legendary weapons
3. Xur, Agent of the Nine
Xur, a mysterious character that spawns in one of several locations in the Tower only on Fridays and Saturdays. Xur accepts Strange Coins and Motes of Light as payment.
When you turn in a bounty, make sure to equip the subclass, weapons, and armor pieces you want the XP to go toward. Don’t waste the bounty XP on something that’s already maxed out.
Xur has special items for purchase called Telemetry that will grant XP boosts for your weapons that lasts 30 minutes. Complete as many bounties as you can, consume the XP boost, then turn in your bounties to get the most benefit.
With every bounty turned in, you have a small, random chance to log a special Exotic Bounty, which will reward you with an Exotic weapon once you complete it.
5. Legendary Gear By Reputation
Players can choose a reputation that will eventually grant access to purchasing Legendary weapons and armor. If you equip the colors of one of the below factions, any Vanguard or Crucible bounty turned in will only go toward reputation to the chosen faction.
Dead Orbit – Grants access to Legendary weapons and armor. Armor has Discipline and Strength.
Future War Cult – Grants access to Legendary weapons and armor. Armor has Intellect and Discipline.
New Monarchy – Grants access to Legendary weapons and armor. Armor has Intellect and Strength.
If you do not equip a specific faction’s colors, bounty reputation will go to either Vanguard or Crucible, depending on the bounty type.
Vanguard – Grants access to purchasing Legendary weapons and armor with Vanguard Marks.
Crucible – Grants access to purchasing Legendary weapons and armor with Crucible Marks.
6. The Cryptarch
The Cryptarch, Master Rahool, is a man located in the Tower that will decode any mystery items you come across. These mystery items, Engrams, are rewards from completing missions, strikes, Crucible matches, or loots found on the ground from killing enemies. Once decoded, the item may turn into a weapon, piece of armor, ascendant material, strange coin, or mote of light.
With every item decoded, you gain reputation toward the Cryptarch rank. At every new level Cryptarch rank, you will receive 2 or 3 random Engrams in your mailbox.
As of Bungie’s Dec. 1, 2014 update, turning in Engrams will gain less reputation toward the Cryptarch, but new rank rewards now have a higher chance of being Legendary Engrams.
7. Leveling Past 20
Leveling past 20 requires equipping Rare, Legendary, or Exotic armor that has Light points. The Light points on your armor will increase as you upgrade the armor’s defense, thus increasing your level as well. Eventually, Legendary or Exotic armor will require Ascendant Shards to fully upgrade its Light and defense.
The higher your level, the better you take damage as well as deal it. This is not including your actual attack and defense stats, but a level modification curve instead (does not count in Crucible).
8. Sub Classes
At level 15, each class can choose to either switch to the other subclass with new abilities or continue to build the abilities of the current subclass. For example, Titans start as Strikers, an offensive subclass, but can switch to Defenders, a defensive subclass. If you choose to switch, the new subclass will start with absolutely nothing. That is, you’ll have no grenade ability, no Lift, no super ability and all of those must be gained back through XP.
Striker – Smash the ground and dissolve enemies in a maelstrom of Arc Light.
Defender – Shape Void Light into an indestructible shield to protect you and your allies from harm.
Gunslinger – Summon a flaming pistol which disintegrates enemies with Solar Light.
Bladedancer – Charge your blade with Arc Light and consume your foes with lightning.
Voidwalker – Hurl an explosive bolt of Void Light at the enemy, disintegrating those caught within its blast.
Sunsinger – Fill yourself with Solar Light, dramatically increasing the effectiveness of all your abilities.
9. Create An Alternate Character
You will eventually gain gear for a class that is not your own. You could simply dismantle the gear or you could play an alternate character on the side for fun.
Let’s say your main character is level 20+, doesn’t need XP, but needs some planet resource material to upgrade gear. Instead of using your main, hop on your low level alt and Patrol other planets for material. This is a great way to XP your alt on the side by killing off enemies while finding resources for your main. Just don’t forget to put the resources in your bank.
The Weekly Heroic and Weekly Nightfall Strikes reward Strange Coins and can be completed only once a week per character. This means you can double or triple your number of Strange Coins every week if you just complete the strikes once again on your alternate character(s).
10. Ways To Gain Experience Points
Gaining XP allows you to level up, increase your abilities, and improve your weapons and armor.
Killing Enemies– Each mission will have you killing hoards of aliens and most likely a difficult final boss. If you really want to gain XP, stray from completing the mission and explore the rest of the territory. You’ll find plenty more enemies to kill which will get you closer to your next level or upgrade.
Completing Crucible Matches – The Crucible is the online multiplayer head-to-head matches. There are several game types to choose from that will reward Crucible reputation, marks, and gear, but there will be one random “XP reward” match that gives XP as well. Just hover your cursor over the different game types to see which one rewards XP.
Completing Bounties – Bounties play a huge role in the world of Destiny and give reputation points as well as up to 5,000 XP for a single bounty. Just go to the Bounty Tracker at the tower to see what’s available.
Completing Missions – Certain missions will grant you additional XP bonuses as well as other rewards after you talk to your head master. Missions also progress the story line.
